DIY AKG 414 repair

Hi,

I'm looking to refurbish a set of AKG C414s that I have been given as they are broken.
As a bit of a learning experience I am looking to do this myself. I have replaced the capsules with matched AK12s as the old ones are in poor condition.
Before removing the capsules the mics have a constant hum through them on all settings is is much like an earth hum. I can still hear audio from the mic but it has this severe hum on top.
I have found that one of the mics loose the hum almost completely when I turn the body to certain angles.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Hi Coal, it is very important that the head grill/mesh is making a perfect connection with pin 1 on the XLR connect. The grill/mesh on the C414 only makes connection mechanically so it is possible when you twist it you are making the connection but it is not connecting properly without the body is twisted. Without the grill being connected to ground creating a Faraday Shield the very high impedance capsule will pick up EMI (hum) from the room.

Check that there is a good connection between pin 1 and the grill/mesh when the microphone is put back together.

Cheers, Dave

Thanks for your reply Dave.

The 414 was given to me because the basket came off when the frame holding it to the body was snapped clean off. I do not know how someone managed to do this. I have ordered more mesh to make a basket as the original is missing.

I suspected the basket may have been the issue. Your reply is most helpful, I will post an update if on the results.

Thanks again.
