T.Bone SC 1100 upgrade

Postby mattenylander » Fri Mar 07, 2014 1:50 am

Hello!
I have a T.Bone SC 1100 that I'm interested to mod. Any suggestions about what I can do/mods that can be used?.
Please let me know if you need more detailed pics.

I was planning to put in a 47 or 67 capsule but wanted to check if that's possible?

Hello Matte, my apologies for the delayed response. Your Post just showed up in my INBOX late yesterday.

The SC1100 has a discrete class "A" transformer coupled circuit based on the original AKG 414 from the early 70's. This circuit has 14db more headroom than a U87.

The capacitors in the SC1100 are already high quality tantalum and polypropylene. R10 can be changed to a 2.2K which will increase the output level and headroom by 3db.

The SC1100 has a dc to dc converter board similar to the U87AI in order to polarize the rear diaphragm via the pattern switch with 110 v dc for FIG 8.

The SC1100 has a low tech single winding transformer that works remarkably well when driven from the much lower output impedance of the 414 circuit.

We can supply a 2.25:1 transformer with dual bobbin windings and bi-metal laminations for $59. Our 2.25:1 transformer will take 6db more level than the stock transformer and recover much faster from percussive transients.

The SC1100 has no pre-emphasis and there is lots of room in the head grill for either our AK47 or AK67 which will both work well with that circuit.

The AK47 will give it a more U47fet tone but with 3 patterns and the AK67 will give it a more U87 tone but with more headroom.

Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the info! I just bought a AK47 capsule and installed it. But when I opend up the microphone one of the white cables from the trafo went of the soldering point and I can't remember or see on the picture where it has been. I tested the microphone and it "worked" but I had to gain a lot more than usual and there was no bass. If you look at these pictures there is the white cable that comes from the same hole as the black and red cables. Any idea where the white cable should be soldered?. :S

Hello, R10 in the SC1100 should be 2.2K and you could increase the coupling capacitor C4 to a 22ufd/35v.

You could also change the output transformer to our dual bobbin with bi-metal laminations have a ratio of 2.25:1.

Either the AK47 or AK67 capsule will work. I would think the AK47 might be the best "fit" with the circuit and headgrill.

Cheers, Dave

I mailed to Mike in Sweden and he located that the white cable should be soldered to ground so I did that and now the mic works absolutely fantastic! It really sounds amazing! so the bass/gain problem is all gone.
Can you explain further how the R10/capacitor swap will affect on the mic performance?.

Hi Matt, good work!!!

R10 in some of these microphones was a 4.7K but with a 2.2K the output of the nominal output of the microphone is increased 3db and the headroom is also increased 3db.

Cheers, Dave

Hi guys.
I'm new here-recent search brought (as it seems :) ) to the right place.
For quite some time I own two tbone sc1100. As years passed by, I aquired quite a selection of mics and those two poor suckers, were waitng...
Since I'm emotionally attached to poor suckers, I tought to "pimp" them.
As wrote before, search led me here, since this was only site to offer tangable results.
So far, the only issue I have, is finding transformers, since Advanced Audio Mic store does not sell them anymore.
Can anyone help me on this topic (bear in mind, I'm from europe, so overseas(US) online sellers wont work for me-transportation cost)?
Or maybe someone has one laying around and wuold be willing to sell it.
Thank you.

Hi

I was also looking for the transformer that was mentioned in this post. I guess, Dave is busy for Namm and Musikmesse Frankfurt, so we might have to be patient or write to Mike in Sweden.
