Advanced Audio CM87se

The CM87SE is in most aspects identical to the CM87. It is a large diaphragm fet three pattern condenser microphone that features our double-diaphragm/double back-plate 6-micron AK67 type capsule and Class “A” transformer coupled amplifier design. It is well suited for recording vocals or instruments in any studio or live application and able to capture the drums at very close distances.

Advanced Audio CM87se

The CM87SE came about because a fellow engineer asked if he could use our now defunct CM87 in close on drums in a “Glynn Johns” type set-up where the microphones are less than 2’ from the closest drum or cymbal source. To accomplish this we fit a more complex output transformer with dual windings and bi-metal lamination’s that is able to handle more easily the fast rising drum transients when placed close to the drums.

The CM87SE is a large diaphragm fet three pattern condenser microphone that features our double-diaphragm/double back-plate 6-micron AK67 type capsule and Class “A” transformer coupled amplifier design. It is well suited for recording vocals or instruments in any studio or live application and able to capture the drums at very close distances.

The CM87SE is built to a very high standard and offers a remarkably full yet well-defined and ultra-clean sound. We fit the more sophisticated output transformer here in our shop,  and the CM87SE, like all of our mics, goes through a rigourous level of QC.

The CM87SE can be configured as either omni, cardioid, or figure-eight via a front mounted metal toggle switch.

The CM87SE has 14db more headroom than traditional fet/transformer circuits.

“AA microphones have immediately taken a place in my mic selection for tracking. They’ve been used to recording everything from drums to vocals. I’m able to make micing choices based on my preferences for their older counterparts and have very similar sonic result. The character of each AA microphone is true enough to it’s inspiration that it’s easy to achieve the sound I know I want without the need to use much in the way of EQ. With a price much lower than vintage or other boutique mics, they are an easy choice.” Kings Of Leon – “Come Around Sundown” cm47se – BGV’s, bass amp cm12se – violin, piano, key amp, wurli cm87se – guitar amp 414 – B3 organ (leslie) Cold War Kids – “Mine Is Yours” cm47se – BGV’s, bass amp cm12se – key amp Jacquire King – Grammy Winner / Producer /Mixer / Engineer

    I recently bought a used cm87 and a new cm87se.
The used one was very dated and had a problem with the capsule … The European company immediately gave me help!
He fixed and upgraded the cm87 to cm87se and then they match it with the new one.

Now I have two cm87se which I often use in XY or Blumlein configuration as over head or room mic on drums.

Compared to my two vintage u87s I found a very similar frequency response, a much higher gain with easier coupling to the preamps and a better transient response.
In front of a battery the sound is more realistic!

I have no doubts about the quality of the product.
    Excellent customer care and attention.

Having had to sell my AKG414EBs in tough times, I felt that recording my grand piano would never be the same. However I bought a pair of CM87se and am back in business. They are great!
