Advanced Audio CM414

The CM414 is a large dual-diaphragm, 3-pattern fet microphone based on the design and specifications of AKG’s famous C414. The CM414 response is very smooth up to 8kHz, then rises to about 4dB at 15kHz, adding an “airy” quality to the sound.

Capsule:

The Advanced Audio CM414 features a 34mm capsule with 6-micron-thick German mylar diaphragms. This capsule is very accurate and has a smooth frequency response that matches within 2 dB the response of the capsules used in the AKCG C12 and early AKG C414 microphones. It is the same capsule used in our popular CM12.

Circuit:

The CM414 uses a two-stage Class A fet circuit similar to the one found in the original AKG C414. The fet is buffered by a discrete transistor before being coupled into the output transformer, a strategy superior to the single-fet method used in the Neumann U87.

The CM414 has a -10dB pad, a low-frequency roll-off switch, and 3-way pattern switch on the body.

    “AA microphones have immediately taken a place in my mic selection for tracking. They’ve been used to recording everything from drums to vocals. I’m able to make micing choices based on my preferences for their older counterparts and have very similar sonic result.     CM414’s have easily become my first-choice mics for a variety of applications.
    As a composer, producer and sound designer, I have been using them for years in the studio, mostly on acoustic instruments and vocals, because they capture any source I throw at them reliably and in great detail. The clean recordings take in EQs and post-processing easily, as these mics have no narrowband footprints.
    As a creator of audio effects and virtual instruments, I often need to faithfully recreate the acoustics of recording environments. The CM414 are so detailed that, even when set up as spaced omnis, they retain outstanding focus, never making the source appear distant or smeared.
    Transients, dynamics, full band response and spatial localisation (if used in pairs) are excellent and can be trusted with the more disparate environments, sources and pressure levels.
    Quality was of the same very high standard for distinct orders I made years apart. The audio characteristics I measured (response and sensitivity) were within tight tolerance in my case.
    The AA team has been friendly, helpful and punctual in all occasions.
